The queen of dragons, the breaker of chains and daughter of the mad king, Daenerys Targaryen has certainly gone mad. Power destructs and absolute power destructs absolutely, it was on the cards but fans were blinded by the idea that Daenerys Targaryen, accompanied by Jon Snow, will be a just and better ruler of the seven kingdoms. She had also a very strong impulse to assert her authority. She hardly spared anyone who did not bend the knee.
It was hoped that the last season will be full of head-on collisions between opposing forces. There was only one full scale battle and that was in the third episode. What happened in the 5th was not a battle. It was carnage. Kings Landing was charred by the fire breathing queen. It was hopeless. It ceased to be the battle between right and wrong and became a conflict between evil and greater evil.
What is the difference between Cersei Lannister and Daenerys? Both are power hungry, both are ready to use ruthless means to stay in power. In fact it is in the nature of rulers to be brutal when it comes to their thrones. Rulers glorified as heroes and liberators seem more like fallacies of history rather than facts. Power is a dangerous thing. It does change the nature of a character. That is the reason why political systems have evolved to check the “mad” pursuits of a person in power. History can give us a glimpse into how British monarchy developed into a constitutional monarchy and how the French revolution of 1789 shook the course of French politics.
Jon Snow is one character who never desired power. Although he is the true heir to the iron throne yet he does not want it, why? Because he is portrayed as an ideal human being who wants peace and harmony between people. He is the one who brought the wildlings to the other side of the wall. It was his efforts that united the north against the threat of the White Walkers. He also compromised and bowed before the dragon queen for the greeter good. But we are left with an hour or so of Jon Snow. The entire Game of Thrones (GOT) depends on what he will do next.
With IMDB rating reaching 9.5 at the start of the 8th season, Game of Thrones (GOT) has come down to 9.4 after the release of the 5th episode. Much is over for GOT and one wonders what possible twists and turns the last episode could hold for us. One thing is sure; all the fans of this epic TV series want to hear just one sentence from their favorite character Jon Snow about Daenerys Targaryen, “she is not my queen”.
For most GOT had ended with the Battle of the Bastards. It was the best episode technically, dramatically and creatively. The battle sequence was the greatest ever filmed for cinema or TV. The challenge was to surpass that benchmark. The GOT team does not come even closer to the perfection and emotional high points of the Battle of the Bastards.
